Watch Part 1 Here.

We design and 3D CNC carve this custom wood frame for our Aluminum Robot on a General® iCarver CNC machine using Amana Tool® industrial solid carbide spiral CNC router bits.

Pierre-Luc Arseneau from PLA3D.com created the gear shaped vectors in Corel Draw and imports the vectors into ArtCam to give his shapes 3D relief. After creating his tool path simulations in ArtCam and exports them to a thumb drive, he imports the cut file directly into his CNC machine and loads the file. After zeroing his X, Y and Z with each tool, Pierre is ready for cutting.

Step 1.
Amana Tool® 1/4" Dia Solid Carbide Spiral Flute Plunge Router Bit #46415 performs a roughing pass to remove the bulk of the material for the following smaller diameter router bit finishing pass.

Step 2.
Amana Tool® 1/16” Dia Solid Carbide Spiral Ball Nose 2D/3D Carving CNC Router Bit with ZrN Coating #46282 cuts clean and deep to reveal the final shape of the gears and objects in the wood frame.

Step 3.
Amana Tool® 1/8” Dia Solid Carbide Spiral Flat Bottom 2D/3D Carving CNC Router Bit with ZrN Coating #46573 cuts cuts around the perimeter of the frame from the wood and removes it from his CNC machine.

Step 4.
Pierre sands the frame to prepare it for staining. Using Minwax wood finish stain color Espresso brown#273, he uses a small painters brush to apply the stain into the deep relief carvings. Pierre then uses pastels to provide a distressed look to the wood. Finally, he clear coats the frame and glues in the Aluminum Robot from Part 1 and hangs on his wall.
