Watch step-by-step as we design and carve this beautiful California 3D topographical map from reclaimed walnut. Final dimension measure 14" wide x 36" tall x 2-1/2" high.

Step 1
Download the geographical maps from the US Government websites and translate the 2D patterns into 3D design for CNC carving

Step 2
Solid Carbide Spiral Plunge Router Bit no. 46272 cuts the perimeter of California State

Step 3
ZrN Coated Solid Carbide Spiral Ball Nose Router Bit no. 46495 rough cuts the reclaimed walnut and removes unnecessary material with it’s thick 1/2” tip diameter

Step 4
ZrN Coated Solid Carbide Spiral Ball Nose Router Bit no. 46283 uses it's 1/4” tip diameter to make an intermediate roughing pass

Step 5
ZrN Coated Solid Carbide Spiral Ball Nose Router Bit no. 46284 makes the first of two finishing passes with it’s 1/8” tip diameter

Step 6
ZrN Coated Solid Carbide Spiral Ball Nose Router Bit no. 46582 utilizes its extremely thin 1/16” tip diameter for the final finishing pass

Step 7
We commissioned Pierre-Luc to hand paint the map with realistic design based on US government renderings, he then clear coats the piece for durability
