Watch as we create this CNC 3D Carved Wooden Map of the Kentucky Counties using Amana Tool® Solid Carbide and Carbide Tipped CNC Router Bits as well as the Amana ElectroBlu™ Coated Prestige™ Carbide Tipped Saw Blade.

The final size of this map is 18" heigh x 1.5" deep x 42" long and is currently hanging over a fireplace somewhere in Kentucky.

We took the following steps to create this custom Wooden Map video:

Step 1
We download a 2D map showing the Kentucky counties from Google then traced over the counties using Adobe Illustrator to create the vector artwork. The software used to generate the map image was a combination of Rhinoceros 5.0 (NURBS modeler) and a plug-in called Grasshopper (a parametric modeler).

Step 2
Amana Tool's ElectroBlu Coated "Prestige Series” General Purpose Carbide Tipped Saw Blade No. PR1040C cuts each of the seven Pine wood 2x4's to 1-1/2" heigh x 2.5" deep x 42" long. We then used Gorilla Glue and clamps to hold the wood together permanently.

Step 3
Amana Tool's Mini Insert Spoilboard Router Bit No. RC-2250 re-surfaces the wood for an even cutting surface throughout.

Step 4
Amana Tool's Carbide Tipped Straight Plunge Router Bit No. 45426 uses all of it’s 1/2” tip diameter to remove the bulk of the wood as you begin to see the pattern to take shape.

Step 5
Amana Tool’s Solid Carbide Double Flute Ball Nose Up-Cut Spiral Router Bit No. 46376 utilizes it’s smaller 1/4” tip diameter to cut out closer corners of the material.

Step 6
Amana Tool’s Solid Carbide Spiral Flute Plunge Down-Cut Router Bit No. 46227 with it’s 1/8” tip diameter cuts further into the wood providing more detail and then cuts a line separating each Kentucky County from each other.

Step 7
Finishing. We lightly sanded the surface before applying Minwax semi-gloss fast-drying polyurethane aerosol spray to the wood map.
